The Georgetown Police Department (GPD) is very pleased to bring you the Citizen Police Academy. Through the implementation of the Citizen Police Academy, the GPD is able to offer new insight into how Police Officers perform their duties, as well as how the GPD serves the community. The success of any police agency depends largely upon the amount of cooperation and support it receives from the citizens it serves. 2008 6th Citizen Police Academy Date to be announced History In 1977, Devon & Cornwall Constabulary, Middlemoor, Exeter in England estabished the first "Police Night School." The pilot course indicated that a 10 week course was sufficient to meet basic information requirements. The group quickly developed an "identity" which enhanced discussion, and it became apparent in the early stages of the course that the most informed members of the public were unaware of the complexities of police work. In 1985, the first Citizen Police Academy in the United States was established in Florida by the Orlando Police Department. The well publicized Academy was such an instantaneous success that it led to the formation of academies throughout the United States. Mission of the Academy The Citizen Police Academy (CPA) has been established to promote understanding of the Georgetown Police Department (GPD), and their policies and procedures. Police work is filled with many variables that require professional solutions. Our goal is to reduce perceived suspicions and misconceptions by establishing mutual trust and cooperation between the police and the citizens of Georgetown, Scott County. The Citizen Police Academy presents an opportunity to provide civic awareness. Classroom presentations, lectures, and hands-on experiences offer participants valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of the Police Department. Department employees receive direct feedback from each participant. This two-way communication between police officers and the community furthers the effort to improve the quality of life for residential and business communities. It is our hope that graduates of the Academy will share this new knowledge with other members of the community as the opportunity arises. Course Instruction Certified police officers and supervisors with particular expertise on each topic will provide briefings, demonstrations and discussions about police operations. The instruction is comprehensive and covers a different area of the Division of Police each week. This will allow citizens to acquire a working knowledge of the activities that the Georgetown Police perform. A vital part of the Academy is participation in role playing scenarios. There will be many opportunities for participants to take part in "hands-on" mock crime scene processing, traffic collision reconstruction, tactical traffic stops, defensive driving and different types of use of force. Course Description Instruction consists of one 3 hour class held each week for the duration of thirteen weeks. Training will be held in the evenings (location to be announced). All Classes are free.
